New native trees for Box Hill and Burwood

Back to Newsfeed

We’re creating greener, shadier spaces in Burwood and Box Hill, with 750 new native trees being planted in Burwood and Box Hill – well before Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East is complete.

The first 250 native trees have been planted this month along Gardiners Creek and Blackburn Creeklands corridor, creating new habitats for local insects, birds and wildlife, and improving the trails where locals ride, walk and run.

In partnership with Whitehorse City Council, the trees have been grown from locally-collected seeds so they are suited to the local area and more resilient to climate change.

The underground SRL East stations in Box Hill and Burwood will provide convenient cross-suburb connections to jobs, health services and study opportunities to meet the needs of these growing suburbs.

4000 trees will be planted as part of SRL East works, doubling the tree canopy in the neighbourhoods around the stations. It means for every tree impacted by the project, at least 3 will be planted nearby.
