Putting safety first: Janice Levi

With experience spanning the military, mining and city-shaping infrastructure projects across Brisbane and Melbourne, Janice Levi brings a deep understanding of safety in complex environments to Suburban Rail Loop (SRL).

After finishing high school, Janice jumped head-first into the Royal Australian Air Force, working in supply and logistics. Since then, she has worked with Fulton Hogan and Transurban on other Big Build projects, including the Monash Freeway upgrade and West Gate Tunnel Project.

Janice joined Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) as a Senior Safety Adviser in 2021 and is now the Safety Manager for the project’s tunnels and civils construction works. She works closely with SRL staff and contractors to create a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility.

The first stage of the project, SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill, will deliver 6 brand new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill. Trains will be taking passengers in 2035.

Construction of SRL East is powering ahead at all station sites and the train stabling facility in Heatherton, and with the first tunnel boring machines arriving on site next year, safety remains a key focus – both on site and within the workplace.

Janice says she is mindful of the mental health and wellbeing component of safety – despite a positive cultural shift, there is always work to be done.

‘Creating a safe workplace is not just the physical safety, but also means a culturally safe workplace for everyone. The increased focus on mental health and wellbeing in the workplace nowadays has been a great positive shift.’
