Year 12 John Monash Science School students have just completed an environmental science project using SRL as a case study and our project team recently went along to talk to them about SRL and how community feedback has helped shape the design and development of the project.
As part of their course, the class of around 50 students studied the SRL East Environment Effects Statement (EES) Victoria’s first fully digital EES - which considered the noise, vibration and air quality impacts associated with constructing SRL East and mitigation measures and ways to minimise the potential impacts.
The John Monash Science School is on the Clayton campus of Monash University, where SRL East will deliver a direct rail link for the first time. The underground SRL station will be a quick stroll across the university campus for the school’s 600 students.
The students asked questions about travel times, ticketing and the green benefits of public transport and were also excited to hear about career opportunities on SRL East and the SRLA graduate program.
Sustainability measures are at the forefront of SRL’s design and delivery. Our trains will be energy efficient and high-tech and by 2050, we’ll have doubled the tree canopy in the areas around SRL stations.
Construction of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill is now underway, creating up to 8000 direct local jobs. Trains will be running by 2035, with six brand new underground stations opening up access to key employment, health and education destinations.
Students will be able to travel from Box Hill to Monash University in just 12 minutes, saving around 30 minutes.
