Take a look at what's happening on SRL sites
2026 has been a huge year so far on SRL construction sites from Cheltenham to Box Hill, with towering cranes, piling rigs, tunnel boring machines and acoustic sheds transforming the sites and getting ready for the start of tunnelling.
Giant tunnel boring machines (TBM) are being assembled on site at Burwood, where they’ll start carving the tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill later this year.
Another TBM launch site is also nearing completion in Clarinda, where machines will launch later this year to dig the tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley. Take a look at the huge progress being made in Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill, and the train stabling facility and network support sites.
Box Hill We're building 2 new permanent parks at Ellingworth Parade and Watts and Court streets with a basketball court, play equipment and nature play space so locals can get active and enjoy the outdoors – just a short walk from Box Hill Gardens.
Crews are also moving underground services at the future SRL station site. The new underground station will be in the heart of Box Hill, close to the existing Box Hill Station and be surrounded by new and upgraded parks and plazas.
Burwood While tunnel boring machines will soon launch from the first launch site at Burwood, a second site is now being excavated, where the giant machines will next year start carving the twin tunnels towards Box Hill. When complete, this launch site – close to Burwood Highway – will be 21m deep, 38m long and 27m wide.
The two launch sites will eventually become the ends of the new station, which will deliver a direct train connection to Deakin University for the first time and make it easier for Burwood locals to reach destinations right across Melbourne.
There’s more to come, with tunnelling from Burwood towards Glen Waverley to start this year.
Glen Waverley Major construction of the new SRL station is underway, with piling works to build the deep, underground foundations that will support the station structure.
Once piling is complete, crews will start excavating the space where the new SRL station will be built. The future light-filled station will be surrounded by new public spaces and walking and cycling links – connecting more people to the heart of Glen Waverley.
The Myrtle Street East and West car parks are now open, delivering approximately 270 car spaces for locals and visitors while we build the new station.
Monash Crews are installing underground concrete support walls in preparation for excavating the future SRL station site.
Lots of important work has already been completed, including moving underground services, upgrading traffic intersections and demolition to prepare the expansive site for major construction.
SRL will provide a direct rail connection to Monash University for the first time – making it quicker and easier for students, workers and visitors to get to campus.
Clayton Crews have finished installing underground concrete support walls and are starting to excavate the future SRL station site.
Work is also underway on the underground passenger connection that will link SRL and the existing Clayton Station, making it easy for passengers to move between services.
When complete, the new SRL station at Clayton will become a transport super hub – connecting more people to Clayton’s vibrant town centre and the Monash Medical Centre, and providing faster and more convenient journeys across Melbourne and Gippsland.
Cheltenham Works are underway to deliver new and improved open spaces at Sir William Fry Reserve – including a new skate park and basketball court for the community to enjoy.
Designs for the replacement open space for the SRL station at Cheltenham have been finalised, and the new parkland will be delivered in the former Highett Gasworks site in Highett, next to Sir William Fry Reserve.
The new underground station at Cheltenham will be the southern gateway to SRL, connecting more people to this bustling jobs, shopping and dining hub, and providing Frankston line passengers with a convenient connection to Monash and Deakin universities.
SRL East is creating thousands of jobs, with more than 3300 people working on the project and more than 18 million hours worked so far.
Trains will be running in 2035.
