The first to ride SRL

Back to Newsfeed

The prep students of Essex Heights Primary School will be among the first to ride Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) to work, university and TAFE when SRL East opens by 2035.

Our engineers recently visited the school with a fun and informative presentation about building big projects like SRL, how our equipment works and the construction now underway in Burwood.

The (mostly) 5 year old kids learned about the types of vehicles used on the project including utes and cranes, before putting on protective gear and seeing what it’s like to operate a mini digger.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will connect Victorians to more education and job opportunities - helping the next generation of workers achieve their dream careers.

The new underground SRL station at Burwood will deliver a direct train line to Deakin University for the first time, while the station at Monash will open up access to Monash University. Box Hill Institute will also be easier to access with a new station at Box Hill.

Construction of SRL East will create up to 8000 jobs – from workers across the trades to technical specialists and machine operators. Around 14% of hours on the first phase of work is being completed by apprentices, trainees and cadets.

Employment in the broader area around the station in Burwood is expected to double to 24,000 jobs when SRL East and SRL North are built.

Right now, Essex Heights Primary School prep students are busy dreaming of what they’re going to be when they grow up, including truck drivers, police officers and vets.
