More quality housing, jobs closer to home, greener streets and parks, and better public transport – thousands of Victorians are sharing their visions for the neighbourhoods around the new Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East stations.
The draft SRL Precinct Visions released in December have already received 2,200 responses from residents, traders and community groups – and have been viewed more than 30,000 times.
Locals around Cheltenham strongly support more local greenery – particularly along Nepean Highway – and walking and cycling links in the local area.
Around the SRL East stations at Monash, Clayton and Glen Waverley, people are looking for more green space, cycling connections, restaurants and retail outlets.
Communities around Box Hill and Burwood have thrown their support behind ideas for improved connections throughout Box Hill and plans for the naturalisation of Gardiners Creek adjacent to the new SRL station at Burwood.
The draft visions outline how the communities surrounding the 6 underground SRL East stations at Box Hill, Burwood, Glen Waverley, Monash, Clayton and Cheltenham could evolve over time.
Conversations with community members on the future of SRL East neighbourhoods will continue throughout 2024 – both in-person and online as part of an extensive ongoing engagement program. This is in addition to hundreds of submissions already received in response to the SRL Precincts Discussion Paper released in August 2023.
Engagement materials are available in Greek and Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), and 7 Community Panels – including a Youth Panel – will allow for ongoing, in-depth discussions throughout the process.
With Melbourne’s population expected to reach the size of London in the 2050s, SRL will address housing supply across our middle suburbs – delivering more diverse and affordable housing options close to world-class public transport, jobs and services.
With SRL trains taking passengers by 2035, SRL East will open up access to key education, health and employment centres and deliver more housing options in each of the SRL Station Precincts.
Residents, traders and stakeholders are encouraged to have their say on the draft precinct visions.
