Drivers travelling into the city on the West Gate Freeway will notice some major changes from late February as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
With our24/7 closures on the West Gate Freeway & M80 Ring Road, as part of summer works coming to end, we also want to remind drivers of ongoing nightly closures of Williamstown Road under the freeway throughout March, April and May.
The traffic changes and closures are all part of the plan to widen the freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes, providing smoother and safer journeys for the more than 200,000 drivers who use the freeway each day.
Traffic changes on the West Gate Freeway
From February 28, the inbound lanes of the freeway will be split over Williamstown Road.
As drivers approach Williamstown Road, two of the four lanes will veer left and re-join before the West Gate Bridge.
Drivers wishing to exit at Williamstown Road will need to use the two left lanes.
All four lanes continue to the West Gate Bridge, so drivers wishing to travel in that direction don’t need to make any decisions, they just need to stay in their lane.
Shifting traffic in this way allows work to occur without having to close the freeway for extended periods.

Speed reductions on the freeway
To keep drivers and project crews safe the speed limit will be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h for a 900 metre stretch of the freeway between the Muir Street pedestrian bridge in Spotswood and Williamstown Road.
Overnight Williamstown Road and ramp closures
While these works progress there will also be overnight closures of Williamstown Road under the West Gate Freeway and Williamstown Road inbound exit ramp, to allow crews to continue bridge strengthening to cater for the new lanes on the freeway.
These works are being carried out at night to minimise the impact on local road users as much as possible.
