Making steady progress – Hyde Street ramps take shape

Back to Newsfeed

Our crews have been making major progress on the construction of the new ramp on the northern side of the West Gate Freeway that connects to Hyde Street.

In recent weeks, crews installed 66 massive beams with each beam weighing just under 100 tonnes, which is the equivalent of a Boeing 757.

When complete, this new ramp will be 1.3km long and will provide a new exit for inbound traffic from the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street. The ramp on the southern side of the Freeway, located near Donald Mclean Reserve in Spotswood, will provide a new entry ramp for westbound traffic from Hyde Street to the West Gate Freeway.

Direct connections for freight industry to local industry and ports

The new ramps will take trucks directly to industry and get them off local roads. Trucks unable to use the new tunnel, such as those carrying dangerous goods, or others that are over-height, will be able to avoid residential streets and connect directly to local industry by using the new ramps.

Transforming the area around Hyde Street – a greener and more connected west

Near Hyde Street Reserve and Stony Creek, the Project will also create new walking and cycling paths by completing the missing link in the Stony Creek walking and cycling path. This will be done by linking Hyde St Reserve, the adjacent industrial area and Spotswood Station via Hall Street with a new pedestrian path.

Along the northern side of the Freeway between the Newport rail line and Williamstown Road, the Federation Trail will also be extended with a new bridge over Williamstown Rd and the Williamstown rail line and a new dedicated path through to Hyde Street, offering users a continuous journey from Werribee to the city.
