Hyde Street ramps

We're building two new connections from the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street in Yarraville.

The Hyde Street ramps will provide more reliable and direct connections from the West Gate Freeway to industry, the Ports and the west.

Trucks carrying dangerous goods or over-height trucks that can't use the tunnels will also be able to avoid residential streets by using the new Hyde Street ramps for trips to the port, local industry and fuel depots.

What we're building

The project will deliver:

a new exit for inbound traffic from the freeway to Hyde Street
a new entry for westbound traffic
direct connections for freight to local industry and ports
fewer trucks using inner west streets
transforming the area around Hyde Street to create a greener and more connected west.

The ramp on the northern side of the West Gate Freeway will provide cars, motorcycles, oversized vehicles and trucks with a new exit ramp for inbound traffic from the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street.

While the ramp on the southern side of the freeway will provide motorists with a new entry ramp for westbound traffic from Simcock Avenue to the West Gate Freeway.

Weaving and merging will be reduced through widening the West Gate Freeway, creating dedicated express lanes and stop/go lights on the freeway entry ramps.

Ramp signals will be used on entries to the West Gate Freeway to manage the flow of traffic, help drivers merge and help ease freeway congestion.

The project has installed new lights and upgraded the Simcock Avenue and Douglas Parade intersection to allow for safer and better access to Simcock Avenue, particularly for vehicles accessing the future outbound entry ramp between Simcock Avenue and the West Gate Freeway.

The new traffic signals and a widened intersection, including new pedestrian crossings and traffic islands, have been added at the Simcock Avenue/Douglas Parade intersection in Spotswood to improve visibility and traffic flow arising from the new Hyde Street outbound ramps.

Hyde Street ramps will be tolled in the AM morning peak to balance traffic across the freeway network.

The Hyde Street ramps will offer direct freeway connections to the Port and local industry, and a new entry from the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street, saving trucks up to 50% travel time.

The ramps will also help to ensure trucks will be re-directed off residential roads in the inner west, helping to improve safety, local air quality and noise with 24/7 truck bans applied to local streets.

Trucks carrying dangerous goods or over height trucks that can’t travel in tunnels, will be able to avoid local streets by using the new ramps to connect to the port and fuel depots on Hyde Street.

The project will offer a more direct and efficient route for the freight industry travelling from the west to the port and the rest of Melbourne.

We are delivering more than just the Hyde Street ramps, we are also creating new open space in the area.

Around the Hyde Street Reserve and Stony Creek area of the project, we are transforming vacant spaces, completing missing links in walking and cycling paths, planting indigenous tree species and more.

We’re also building a new elevated Shared Use Path (SUP) that will extend the Federation Trail through to Hyde Street.

It will go over the Williamstown Road inbound exit ramp and run alongside the new Hyde Street exit ramp.
