Plan ahead: Summer construction works in the west

Back to Newsfeed

Over summer, major works will occur on the West Gate Freeway taking advantage of the quieter roads over the summer holiday period.

Motorists should plan ahead and allow extra travel time with delays of up to 60 mins expected.

In January, February and March there will be 24/7 freeway, lane and ramp closures as we demolish and rebuild a number of ramps and bridges to make room for the extra lanes being added in each direction.

The works are part of the West Gate Tunnel Project’s ongoing freeway widening works that will bring us one step closer to delivering four extra lanes on the West Gate Freeway between the M80 Ring Road interchange and Williamstown Road reducing congestion and travel times for people from the west.

These closures are necessary to demolish and rebuild the southbound bridge at Grieve Parade over the West Gate Freeway, and rebuild and realign ramps at the M80 Ring Road interchange.

We encourage drivers travelling along the West Gate Freeway or from the M80 Ring Road to the city to plan ahead or seek alternative routes.

Drivers on local roads in the inner west should also allow for extra travel time.

West Gate Freeway works

Major works and traffic disruptions include:

Grieve Parade to West Gate Freeway: 6 January – 22 March 2021

To widen the Freeway, we will demolish and rebuild the eastern bridge of Grieve Parade.

The work will result in the following disruptions:

  • The West Gate Freeway will be closed in both directions between M80 and Grieve Parade from 6 January to 11 January.
  • Grieve Parade overpass will be closed from 6 January to 11 January
  • Grieve Parade over the West Gate Freeway reduced to one lane in each direction from 11 January to 22nd March
  • Detours will be in place. Delays of up to 60 minutes expected on the West Gate Freeway

M80 Ring Road, Princes Freeway and Geelong Road: 6 January – 22 February 2021

There will be a 6-week full closure of ramps in the following locations:

  • the Princes Freeway to Geelong Road in both directions from 10 January to 22 February
  • the M80 Ring Road exit ramp to the West Gate Freeway inbound from 6 January to 22 February

These closures are required so that we can increase the bridge clearances, replace ageing barriers and bearings on the bridges and repave the surrounding ramps.

Other infrastructure works across Melbourne

Over summer, major infrastructure and public transport construction works will also be taking place across Melbourne. This also includes works on the West Gate Bridge carried out by VicRoads.

Details of the impact for each disruption will be made available ahead of time, and real time information on delays will be provided during each disruption.

Victorians are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
