From 8pm, Saturday 18 May to August 2024, lanes will be closed on Footscray Road between Appleton Dock Road and Shepherd Bridge, with some impacts on Sims Street and Dock Link Road. There will also be overnight closures of Footscray Road required at times.
The closures will help crews work safely to build the new cycling highway or veloway.
The veloway, dedicated for cyclists’ use, will be suspended between the new elevated road above Footscray Road and completely separated from traffic, running from Shepherd Bridge in Footscray to the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek.
The veloway removes the need for cyclists to cross six intersections including busy port entries and exits, giving bike riders a dedicated express off-road route to and from the CBD.
The first segment of the veloway's suspended section will be lifted into place above Footscray Road near Dock Link Road in May.
At 4 metres wide, the veloway will allow plenty of room for Melbourne’s growing number of cyclists, and space to stop for a break or to change a tyre.
Cyclist safety is a key priority in the veloway's design, which includes emergency exits with alarms, lighting and full CCTV coverage, monitored by a traffic control centre. With perforated side panels and a mesh cover, cyclists will be able to enjoy their ride in the sunshine and fresh air.
The veloway is part of more than 14km of new and upgraded paths being delivered by the West Gate Tunnel Project that will make it safer and easier for more people to cycle.
Plan ahead
As the veloway is being constructed near and above Footscray Road, there will be disruptions to motorists from 8pm Saturday 18 May until August, including:
- 24/7 lane closures between Appleton Dock Road and Shepherd Bridge
- 24/7 slip lane closure from Dock Link Road onto Footscray Road westbound carriageway
- Overnight road and lane closures of Footscray Road, and Dock Link Road closures.
Other works along Footscray Road
From 8pm Friday 14 June to 5am Monday 17 June, Footscray Road will be closed in both directions between CityLink and Waterfront Way in Docklands, for crews to carry out bridge widening, drainage, water and power relocation works. Motorists will need to detour via Dynon Road.
