PLANNING

Melton Line Upgrade

Passengers in Melbourne’s west will benefit from longer trains and improved journeys with 9-car VLocity trains running on the Melton Line in 2027, one year ahead of schedule.

Running longer trains will boost passenger capacity by 50% during peak services.

As well as providing more space, the 9-car trains also provide more doors for boarding.

To allow the longer trains to stop at some of the busiest stations on the line, platforms are being extended at Cobblebank, Rockbank, Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations.

Cobblebank train stabling yard

We’ll also build a new stabling yard in Cobblebank, approximately 700m east of the new Melton Station, to house the new trains.

The stabling yard will allow the new 9-car VLocity trains to be at Melton Station ready for first services to the city, supporting trains running efficiently between Melton Station and Southern Cross.

The Cobblebank yard will be future proofed for Metro trains when the Melton Line is electrified in the future.

The Cobblebank train stabling yard will include:

Planned timeline

Construction on the stabling yard and platform extensions is expected to start in early 2026, and the 9-car VLocity trains will run on the Melton Line from 2027.

The new Melton Station, with extended platforms ready for the new 9-car VLocity trains, and future-proofed for electrification, will open in 2026.
