Melton locals will soon benefit from new transport infrastructure, with construction kicking off on the suburb-shaping projects to remove level crossings and build a new Melton Station.
Crews are on the ground and have started to set up sites for the 4 level crossing removals in Melton and Truganina as well as carrying out track and signalling work.
Temporary fencing and barriers were set up around the project area to keep workers safe, and track work was completed while coaches replaced trains earlier this month. This work will continue ahead of piling and major earthworks.
The massive investment for a better transport network in Melton includes new rail bridges, which will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads and new road bridges will be built over Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina, as well as a new, accessible Melton Station.
The new Melton Station will feature 4 platforms to accommodate Ballarat train services and provide dedicated platforms for services that will originate and terminate at Melton.
The level crossings will be gone for good and the new station open 2 years ahead of schedule in 2026.
In addition, the Melton Line Upgrade will deliver more capacity for passengers in one of the state’s fastest growing areas, with the project finished in 2028.
To support the introduction of longer 9-car VLocity trains and boost passenger capacity on the line by 50%, a new stabling yard will be built at Cobblebank to house the new trains.
Early site investigations will soon get underway, and the facility will be future-proofed for further upgrades on the line.
Across Melbourne, 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 84 already gone for good.
