On completion of major works, we’ll have removed around 580,000 tonnes of material from the landslip, with 4 large benches formed to help stop material from reaching the road in the future.

In preparation for reopening 2 lanes, we’ll:

complete landscaping
pavement and drainage works
add new or reinstate existing signage
clean the road
reduce the amount of traffic management currently in place.

Bogong High Plains Road will remain open while we work, however we may need to halt traffic at times to complete some works safely.

Main landslip

We’re currently working to shape the 4th and final bench across the face of the landslip, which includes excavating material down to the road. Each bench has been engineered to prevent loose material from reaching Bogong High Plains Road in the future and includes an access track wide enough to accommodate maintenance vehicles if needed.

Before major works are complete, we’ll also:

finish work on the maintenance tracks and drainage across the benches
complete revegetation works.

Second smaller landslip

Crews are making great progress towards the repair of the smaller road failure with works to construct a retaining wall nearing completion. Following this, we’ll focus on installing safety guard rail, repairing the damaged pavement and completing line marking.

As we continue working towards the long-term repair of the landslip, we may need to halt traffic at times to complete some work safely. Drivers should allow an additional 15 minutes of travel time.

On completion of the project, we’ll have removed close to 600,000 tonnes of material.

We’re on track to open 2 lanes at both landslip locations late May, ahead of the Winter Ski Season which starts on the King’s Birthday Weekend (Saturday 8 June), weather permitting.

In preparation for reopening 2 lanes, we’ll need to complete pavement and line marking works, clean the road, add new and reinstate existing signage, and reduce the level of traffic management currently in place.

Once 2 lanes are open, we’ll still have finishing works to complete, including:

completing maintenance track works around the landslip
cleaning and removing machinery from the area near the AGL shed
landscaping and earth work at several of our disposal sites.

We’ll also need to connect a permanent water supply to Bogong Village with plans being finalised to install a 1 million litre concrete circular water tank. This tank is in addition to the temporary tanks already in place.

Material is being placed at various approved locations, including the Wermatong Pit in Tawonga, which is being remediated in partnership with Alpine Shire Council and Parks Victoria.

Other locations we are or have used include private properties, Mongans Bridge Quarry, the Alpine Shire Council Transfer Station, and Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

We have a dedicated Land, Planning and Environment Team who work with us to determine suitability of disposal locations, and who ensure all relevant approval processes are followed.

Yes, local and regular visitors will notice a large decrease in our trucks using Bogong High Plains Road. However, we’ll still have construction machinery and vehicles travelling through local areas until all finishing works are complete.

Until major works are complete, we kindly ask that drivers continue to:

be patient, our drivers will pull over and let you pass when it is safe to do so
overtake with caution and only when it’s safe to do so
remember that trucks have large blind spots and cannot turn as sharply, or brake as quickly as a car, so they need to navigate tight bends slowly.

We also ask cyclists:

to minimise using Bogong High Plains Road between the hours of 6am and 6pm on weekdays, when truck volumes are at their highest
wear bright reflective clothing to help make you more visible to drivers
use your hand signals early to let truck drivers know what you are doing.

We are responsible for road maintenance within our work zone. The remainder of Bogong High Plains Road is under the management of the Department of Transport and Planning.

The Grollo Group, who took over management of Bogong Village from AGL in late 2023 will reopen public access to Bogong Village before the start of the Winter Ski Season. This will coincide with completion of construction activity in the village and after 2 lanes have reopened across the front of the landslip.
