Background

There is a large active landslip on Bogong High Plains Road between Mt Beauty and Falls Creek, above Bogong Village – one of the largest experienced on Victoria’s road network in 40 years.

The landslip was first detected in October 2022 and is estimated to be about 70m high and 100m wide.

Following work started by the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to remove loose material from the landslip, Big Build Roads ramped up works to complete the interim repair prior to the start of the Winter Ski Season.

Earlier this year we appointed Whelans Group Investments, a specialised civil contractor based in East Gippsland as our project delivery partner, and we’re on the ground working alongside Whelans to ensure works move forward as quickly and as safely as possible.

Whelans have set up their site office within the Mt Beauty Community Centre, where they’ll remain for the duration of the works.

Secondary road failure

Heavy rainfall in April caused a separate section of Bogong High Plains Road approximately 7km down the mountain towards Mt Beauty to erode.

To keep drivers safe, a small single lane arrangement is in place to guide vehicles around the erosion safely.

These works have recently been handed to Big Build Roads, with investigations now underway to plan for the repair.

Please factor this second minor delay into your journey.
