PLANNING

Ararat to Stawell

Western Highway Upgrade

Overview

Initial planning has progressed for an upgrade of the Western Highway from Ararat to Stawell..

We’ve investigated options to:

  • upgrade capacity along the highway
  • provide safety barriers on both sides of the road
  • upgrade intersections to improve safety and move traffic more efficiently
  • build new access to the highway, with intersections that connect to local roads
  • build a bypass to the north of the township of Great Western.

Planning and development

Planning work completed includes reviewing and, where necessary, updating previous work undertaken by Transport Victoria, including technical studies, designs and approvals in line with current design requirements, legislation and industry standards. This will ensure that the project would achieve positive outcomes for road users and the local community, while avoiding and minimising impacts to cultural heritage and the environment where possible.

This planning work identified a long-term approach to upgrading the highway and continues to inform how the upgrade could be delivered in stages between Ararat and Stawell, supporting future government decision-making.
