Achieving excellent environmental, social and economic outcomes across all phases of North East Link.

Designing a mass timber Motorway Control Centre

The Motorway Control Centre in Bulleen will be at the heart of North East Link. The centre will monitor traffic conditions, store maintenance vehicles and be a 5-Star Green Star building.

The innovative design will be one of the first traffic operations buildings in Australia with a mass timber structure. Mass timber is an engineered product that can replace steel or concrete structural components of buildings.

The mass timber responds to the building’s parkland setting next to new wetlands and will help minimise the building’s carbon footprint.

Timber has a much lower carbon footprint compared to concrete and steel. Timber also stores carbon, removing it from the atmosphere, making it a ‘carbon negative’ product.

We'll source timber that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This will ensure that the supply, manufacturing, and transport will be responsible and sustainable.

The architect-designed control centre will have solar panels, and landscaping will include local plants that will provide habitat for the neighbouring Yarra River (Birrarung) Parklands. Landscaping will also include species that are significant to the Wurundjeri.
