Protecting and seeking opportunities to enhance natural environments.
We know how important trees are to the community, and we're committed to keeping as many trees as possible as we build North East Link. However, for any project of this size, and no matter the level of detailed planning that is in place, some tree removal is unavoidable.
For every tree removed to build North East Link, at least 2 will be planted.
Our tree planting program focuses on planting trees along and near North East Link – keeping them as close as possible to where trees need to be removed. We’re also working with the local community and councils to work out where new trees should be planted.
So far, we have planted more than 2000 trees across Melbourne’s north and east, helping us towards leaving a positive legacy that connects the community with nature in their own backyard.
We’re increasing the number of Matted Flax-lilies, a critically endangered flowering plant found in grass and woodlands in parts of Victoria and Tasmania.
To build North East Link, up to 139 Matted Flax-lily plants will be carefully moved from construction areas to new locations.
Each Matted Flax-lily we collect will be split to create multiple plants – increasing the number of this significant species in Melbourne’s north east.
The Matted Flax-lilies that are planted will be closely monitored for 10 years. During the first month after planting, specialists visit every week. Visits are then done monthly, quarterly, then every 6 months as the plants become established.
In total, more than 450 Matted Flax-lilies will be planted for North East Link – establishing new populations more than triple the original size.
