Changes today, better transport tomorrow

Planning is underway for the future of Sunbury, with major changes coming to your local road and rail network.

Transforming road and rail transport in Sunbury

There’s been plenty happening in Sunbury this year as we continue to upgrade local transport, including removing the Gap Road level crossing.

To lower Gap Road under the railway line, we’ll need to close Gap Road and Station Street between Horne and Evans streets from 30 May until late 2022.

By removing the level crossing at the same time as upgrading the Sunbury Line, the boom gates will be gone 2 years earlier than expected.

As we upgrade the Sunbury Line there will be disruptions from now until late 2022, as we prepare the line for bigger, more modern trains.

The Metro Tunnel will mean room for an extra 113,000 peak hour passengers on the Sunbury line each week. It will cut travel times by up to 40 minutes a day from Sunbury and is on track to be delivered a year early in 2025.

We’re also upgrading Sunbury Road, with safety barriers to be installed along the road in April near Bulla-Diggers Rest Road ahead of major works starting in May.

The project will improve traffic flow and keep you moving safely, thanks to extra lanes, new traffic lights, safety barriers and a second bridge over Jacksons Creek.

Sunbury Line Upgrade and Gap Road level crossing removal

Look out for night and weekend works through April and May.

Gap Road works will continue in June with buses and coaches replacing trains on the Sunbury, Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines from 3 to 29 June.

Gap Road will also be closed to traffic for up to 4 months from 30 May to late 2022.

Traffic will be detoured over the Macedon Street bridge during this time.

Sunbury Road Upgrade

As works progress on the Sunbury Road Upgrade, there’ll be lane closures and speed reductions as required on Sunbury Road between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road.

There will also be occasional access changes and lane closures at Francis Boulevard, Lancefield Road and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road intersections.

Digging deep to remove the Gap Road level crossing

To remove the Gap Road level crossing, we’re building a rail bridge and a road underpass. This means traffic will be able to flow freely underneath the train line from late 2022.

The safest and quickest way to do this is to completely close Gap Road and Station Street between Evans and Horne streets. From 30 May to late 2022, cars, trucks and bikes will need to detour over the Macedon Street bridge, so you’ll need to allow an extra 15 minutes travel time during peak.

You’ll also see more trucks around, taking the excavated dirt out of Sunbury.

Please allow extra time and keep an eye out for our signage to safely guide you through the area.

Access to Sunbury Station and nearby local businesses will remain open at all times, and pedestrians will be able to safely cross the train line via the Sunbury Station overpass.

When the Gap Road level crossing removal and the Sunbury Line Upgrade is completed in 2023, you’ll experience improved travel times and smoother journeys, while also making room for the future growth of Sunbury and surrounding areas.

Big Build Roadshow is returning

We’re coming to Sunbury Square on 7 April to give you an update on our construction progress and listen to your feedback on how we’re doing.

We’ll have people from each of our project teams on hand to answer any questions you have about the major changes we’re making to the local road and rail network.
