Gippsland born-and-bred artist Melanie Caple was commissioned to develop permanent public artworks for Bunyip and Longwarry stations as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade.
Melanie grew up on a dairy farm at Nerrena and works from a studio at Berrys Creek, near Mirboo North.
Melanie developed two artworks - one for each upgraded station that were imprinted on to custom-designed, perforated aluminium sheeting, also known as pic perf.
The artworks
The artworks celebrate the local native flora and fauna, with Melanie also considering the surrounding town, heritage and community elements in her designs. Key creative themes were identified by the local community through consultation undertaken in 2021.
The pic perf aluminium sheeting clads the handrails for accessible pedestrian ramps and stair entrances to the new platforms at each station.
