Overview
We’re upgrading the Werribee Main Road and Princes Freeway Interchange in Werribee to improve safety, reduce congestion and increase connectivity.
The upgrade will:
- Improve intersections at:
- Ison Road / Werribee Main Road (new traffic light controlled intersection)
- Princes Freeway exit-ramp / Wests Road (new roundabout)
- Princes Freeway entry-ramp / Werribee Main Road (new traffic light controlled intersection)
- William Thwaites Drive / Werribee Main Road (new traffic light controlled intersection)
- Add an additional lane on the Werribee Main Road bridge across the Princes Freeway
- Upgrade the Princes Freeway entry-ramp citybound.
Planning progress
Initial planning work completed included traffic modelling, social studies and environmental investigations. This helped understand environmental and social impacts, develop design options, and confirm scope and costs of different options.
A business case has been completed, which examined the interchange upgrade in detail to recommend a design and identify the best delivery approach.
Community and business feedback
We asked for community and business feedback on a upgrade to the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange via Engage Victoria. Thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute.
Feedback was considered in our planning and has helped us understand how people currently use the interchange, as well as their thoughts on access, efficiency, safety and improvements to the interchange that we should consider.

Next steps
Planning work is continuing as the upgrade moves towards construction. Key activities include:
- refining the upgrade’s design
- on-site investigations including identifying underground utilities, testing ground conditions, drainage and flood modelling
- appointing a construction partner.
Construction timelines will be known once our planning has progressed further.
