Western Freeway and Brewery Tap Road Intersection Upgrade 

Overview

Planning and early works are underway for a future upgrade to the Western Freeway and Brewery Tap Road intersection in Warrenheip, to improve safety and freeway access.

Planning update

Planning work is underway and key activities include:

• developing a project design
• detailed traffic analysis and modelling
• on-site investigations to test ground conditions and map utility services
• environmental investigations to understand flora, fauna and tree species.

Initial planning work will be completed in 2027 and will be used to inform the design, cost and timeline of the upgrade.

Community feedback

From 16 February to 8 March 2026, we asked for community feedback to help inform our planning. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback.

We received 441 responses to our online survey, 75 comments were provided on our interactive map, and 90 people attended our community pop-up.

Feedback provided important local insights that have helped us to understand community views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning. Key feedback received includes:

• strong support for upgrading the intersection to improve safety and access
• many people said the intersection feels unsafe due to high-speed freeway traffic, heavy vehicles, complex turning movements and confusion about right-of-way. Several respondents reported near misses and difficulty safely turning or merging
• most respondents said they experience congestion or delays at the intersection, with some avoiding it altogether and using alternative routes due to unpredictable travel times
• respondents suggested a range of improvements, including installing larger “U‑turn must give way” signs, reducing the number of freeway entry and exit points, building an overpass, adding service roads for local businesses, extending slip lanes and improving line marking.

Technical investigations

To help inform planning, a range of site investigations will be undertaken. At times, we may need to implement traffic control measures, including temporary lane closures, stop/slow traffic and reduced speeds. Traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum and busy periods will be avoided, where possible.
