Fauna Sensitive Road Design (FSRD) is aimed at reducing the negative impacts of road infrastructure on wildlife populations including managing the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions and maintaining habitat connectivity and wildlife movements.
These measures include design elements such as:
- fauna road crossings
- barrier fencing
- wildlife-sensitive lighting
- habitat creation and enhancement.
VIDA Roads (previously Major Road Projects Victoria) has developed Fauna Sensitive Road Design Guidelines to provide essential technical advice on FSRD to support effective implementation where it is required on our road projects. The guidelines contain up-to-date guidance on best practice design, ecological concepts, and new types of infrastructure and technologies to mitigate wildlife road strikes and maintain habitat connectivity.
The guidelines also provide advice on how fauna habitats and biodiversity in our road corridors can be managed and enhanced, and how to best monitor the effectiveness of FSRD measures to support continuous improvement.

The design advice in the guidelines is complemented by interactive 360° virtual renders of FSRD elements, including annotations on key features and design considerations for common wildlife crossing structures based on a generic road development scenario. The 360 Visuals communicate key concepts, support multi-disciplinary design solutions and collaboration, and assist in translating design information and ecological concepts between different disciplines and project phases.
The intended audience for these FSRD resources includes VIDA Roads staff and delivery partners that are involved in planning, designing, and delivering our road projects. The guidelines contain a recommended process for implementing FSRD across project phases and ways different disciplines and teams can collaborate to achieve the best outcomes for projects and wildlife.
Important note: The information contained in the FSRD Guidelines or 360 Visuals are not intended to constitute a design specification or design solution. Bespoke design will be required in each instance depending on the ecological objectives needing to be achieved, environment and construction constraints, and consideration of multiple other road delivery requirements.
This application has been designed to be used on a desktop browser.
