Getting ready for construction
We’re closing Webster Street at the level crossing and building a new road under the rail line, connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
We’ll close Webster Street at the level crossing later this year, and the new road underpass will open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.
Before we start construction later this year, we're relocating services and setting up site facilities for our crews.
What to expect

Changes to the way you travel
Cheltenham Road
There will be temporary road and lane closures and changed traffic conditions on Cheltenham Road during power pole works on Sunday 8 June.
Properties impacted by power outages have been notified.
Broadlands and Heart streets
We'll set up additional site facilities on Broadlands Street from late May.
During this time there will be temporary on-street parking closures and traffic management in place along Heart Street to allow for safe access for delivery vehicles.
Webster Street
There will be reduced speeds and temporary lane closures on Webster Street and pedestrian detours as we install underground services near the level crossing from mid June to early July.
Walking and cycling path construction
There will be temporary lane closures and pedestrian detours in place on Webster Street as we build the new walking and cycling path in Woodcock Reserve from late June to September.
We’ll plant 2 trees for every one removed. With the help of the City of Greater Dandenong, we've already planted 15 trees along Dandenong Creek in Woodcock Reserve.
In total we'll plant 30,000 trees, plants and shrubs in the project area onceconstruction is complete in 2026.
Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street, Thomas Street and Lonsdale Street-Service Road
We'll work to safely remove old power poles from 8am to 5pm, Sunday 25 May. During this time:
- Thomas Street will be closed at the southern end, including on-street parking
- lanes will be closed in both directions on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street with 2-way traffic maintained
- traffic may be stopped on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street for up to 10 minutes at a time.
Properties impacted by power outages have been notified.
Thomas Street will close at the southern end as work starts at the corner of Thomas Street and Lonsdale Street-Service Road to prepare for construction of the new road underpass from late May until project completion. Works include:
- installation of safety fencing along Thomas Street and Lonsdale Street-Service Road
- removal of structures at 141-145 Lonsdale Street-Service Road during the day and night
- construction of a new access road to Lonsdale Street-Service Road
- removal of on-street parking on Lonsdale Street-Service Road to allow for construction of the new access road.
Oversize and overmass vehicles will not be able to travel on Thomas Street from late May. Access to businesses will be maintained via Foster Street and Lonsdale Street-Service Road.
We'll work at night to prepare the area for construction during late May and June. Impacted residents will be notified in advance.
We'll build a new northern Lonsdale Street-Service Road entry in June.
While we work, there will be lane closures on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street at times during off-peak periods and overnight. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
Lonsdale Street-Service Road southern end will be closed from late June until project completion.
