The Victorian Government is investing more than $1 billion to duplicate the Cranbourne line, remove four level crossings including Camms Road and build a new Merinda Park Station – improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing for more trains, more often.

We're removing the Camms Road level crossing by building a new road bridge over the rail line. Building a new road bridge will free up traffic for the 12,000 vehicles that pass through the crossing each day. The level crossing will be gone for good by 2024 - one year ahead of schedule.

The Cranbourne line will be level crossing free by 2025, and along with the Metro Tunnel will provide better access to jobs, health and education and make road and rail travel easier, faster and more reliable for Melbourne’s south east.

More than 137 trains pass through the level crossing each day, and with 50 more train services now running on the Cranbourne line it is critical to remove this level crossing in one of Melbourne's fastest growing areas.

Why the Camms Road level crossing needs to go

  • 12,000 vehicles pass through the level crossing each day
  • Boom gates down for 12 per cent of the morning peak
  • 137 trains travel through the crossing during the morning peak
  • Around 2700 passengers use Cranbourne Station each week

Take a look at the updated Camms Road designs

We asked for feedback on the Camms Road Level Crossing Removal Project. Since then, concept designs have been refined with input from the local community.

How your feedback helped shape the Camms Road design

Three key themes were identified from over 545 individual pieces of feedback received from the local community on the concept design.

Safety

We heard that safety is a key concern. Anti-graffiti surfaces, improved lighting in the area and feeling safe to walk at all times of the day are priorities for locals.

In response to community feedback:

  • there will be additional lighting along the shared use path and surrounding areas
  • protective throw screens made of heavy-duty steel mesh will be added to the road bridge to provide passive surveillance from the station and shared use path

Walking and cycling connections

We heard you want better walking and cycling connections.

In response to community feedback:

  • there’ll be a new shared use path and footpaths across the new road bridge
  • new paths will be created through the new car park
  • local residents will be able to walk to the station precinct and beyond with an extension to the new shared use path built as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade – improving connections to the station

Landscaping

We heard how important trees and green spaces are to the local community.

In response to community feedback, additional vegetation and landscaping will be added along the new road bridge, including at least 300 trees and shrubs.

Major construction is starting

We’re getting on with the job of removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Camms Road by building a road bridge over the rail line.

We are now preparing the site for major construction to commence in the next few weeks.

In the last few months we have constructed our new site offices at the corner of Fairfield Street. This has included setting up storage, fencing off work areas and installing temporary facilities for workers.

To build the new road bridge over the next two years we’ll need to:

  • undertake earthworks and minor vegetation removal along Camms Road to prepare the area
  • transport thousands of cubic metres of soil to place between the retaining wall panels that will form the new road bridge
  • lay asphalt over the road bridge and adjoining sections of road.

Changed traffic conditions and traffic management will be in place during this time. We’ll work with local residents, traders and commuters to keep you informed of any impacts.

Throughout construction, vibration, noise and dust monitors will be installed around the work site to help ensure we have the right controls in place to minimise impacts on the community. We will monitor sound levels before and during works so that we can assess the impact to residents and implement further measures where necessary.
