5 May 2023

We’re making the Frankston Line level crossing free by removing all 27 of the dangerous and congested level crossings by 2029 and building 17 new stations, improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

At Glen Huntly we are removing the boom gates at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road. Over the next few months, we’ll work to dig a 1.2km rail trench, build a new Glen Huntly Station, and remove the dangerous boom gates for good.

During this time both Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road will be closed at the level crossings. By closing both roads at the same time, our crews will be able to work quicker and get the roads and rail line open sooner.

This means there will be some changes to how you get around Glen Huntly and Caulfield East. This booklet has maps and information to help you safely get to where you need to go, whether you’re walking, driving, or taking public transport.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Pedestrians

Pedestrian and footpath access to the area will be maintained with some local detours in place.

Detours will be clearly signposted and temporary fencing and concrete barriers will separate the works area and keep pedestrians safe.

Glen Huntly Road will be closed to vehicles between James Street and Grange Road, but pedestrians will still be able to use the footpaths to visit the local shops.

Friday 5 May until mid July: Glen Huntly Road closed

Community Shuttle Bus

If you need help to safely cross to the other side of the rail line, you can travel on the Yarra Trams replacement bus for free if you’re not connecting with a tram or train service. Simply board the bus at a tram replacement bus stop or temporary replacement bus stops.

The Neerim Road level crossing will also be closed, with no pedestrian access between Watson Grove and Heath Drive, and across the level crossing.

Monday 29 May to mid July: Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road closed

Drivers

If you usually drive through Glen Huntly, you will be detoured while these major works take place.

Glen Huntly Road will be closed to vehicles between Booran Road and Grange Road.

Detours will be clearly signposted and traffic management will be in place to keep you safe. Please take care when driving around construction zones and follow the detour signage and any instructions from traffic control staff.

Route 67 tram passengers

From May, we’re removing the tram tracks that cross the rail line at Glen Huntly Road. This means trams can’t operate through this area.

Buses replace Route 67 trams between Glenhuntly Tram Depot and Carnegie from 9pm Friday 5 May until Glen Huntly Road reopens in mid July and tram services resume. When you change from the bus to the tram you must touch on your myki to validate your travel.

Truck movement map

Truck movements in the local area – June to July 2023

To enable excavation works for the trench and remove material from the ‘Big Dig’, up to 60 truck movements every 12 hours will be required across the site from 2 June for about 3 weeks. Once we have dug the trenches, truck movements will continue at a reduced rate until early August to bring in construction materials to complete the trench, build the new Glen Huntly Station and rebuild the rail line.

To minimise disruption, trucks will be loaded at different locations along the rail line and the most direct routes to North Road and Dandenong Road will be used. See map below for truck haulage routes.

However, residents will notice an increase in traffic and trucks on local streets. Where possible trucks, replacement buses and community shuttles will detour using main roads. There may be some congestion and delays in the area due to additional traffic and trucks queuing to enter or exit the construction zones
