Transforming Melton

We’ve removed the level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton and at Hopkins Road in Truganina and the new accessible Melton Station is open to passengers.

Melton is boom-gate free, with the completion of the new rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads, eliminating almost half an hour of down time during the morning peak alone.

Exford Road opened in August after the rail infrastructure was removed and the road lowered to provide a 4.8m clearance under the new rail bridge.

Coburns Road opened in September after being reconstructed to create a smoother surface for drivers.

September also marked the opening of the new elevated, accessible and modern station that is future proofed for electrification.

Coburns and Exford road boom gates going marked the 93rd and 94th level crossing removals, making travel safer and more reliable for the local community.

Thank you for your patience while we put finishing touches on the new Melton Station precinct until early 2027.

Project benefits

  • New modern and accessible Melton Station.
  • Boom gates gone for good at Coburns, Exford, Ferris and Hopkins roads.
  • Eliminating nearly half an hour of boom gate down time in the morning peak.
  • Saving travel time for 73,000 vehicles each weekday.
  • Improved safety and better connections.

Finishing touches at Melton Station

The new Melton Station is open, with crews continuing works across the station precinct.

To enable works to progress on the station car parks, northern forecourt and new bus interchange, temporary changes in the Melton Station precinct will be in place until early 2027.

These include:

  • PTV bus stops for routes 452, 453, 454 and 457 temporarily located on Staughton Street.
  • PTV bus stops for routes 455 and 459 temporarily located on Brooklyn Road towards Coburns Road.

Staged short-term closures of up to 30 car spaces in the Staughton Street car park will continue until late 2026 as crews complete the following works:

  • landscaping
  • line marking
  • painting
  • drainage works
  • staffed ticket office with accessible-height customer service window
  • air-conditioned waiting room
  • bathroom facilities with 6 toilets
  • bus interchange with 7 bus bays
  • more than 900 car spaces available
  • northern forecourt and parkiteer with 5 additional pick-up and drop-off bays.

When the station is complete in early 2027, passengers can look forward to:

Melton Line Upgrade getting ready for longer trains

Longer 9-car VLocity trains will be able to run on the Melton Line next year, one year ahead of schedule.

Running longer trains will boost passenger capacity by 50% during peak services.

In August, our crews worked day and night while trains weren't running to complete important works at Cobblebank Station, Rockbank Station and the new Cobblebank train stabling yard.

Platforms at Cobblebank and Rockbank stations were extended and new rail tracks for the stabling yard were connected into the existing Melton Line.

The team also carried out excavation, drainage and signalling works at the stabling yard.

Future proofed for Melton Line electrification, the stabling yard will enable trains to be stored, cleaned and prepared ready for first service from the new Melton Station.

With new nine car trains already servicing Deer Park and Wyndham Vale stations, Melton Line passengers will experience the same benefits when works are complete in 2027.

Melton electrification

Site investigations are continuing along the rail corridor between Sunshine and Melton to inform future electrification of the Melton Line.

Detailed flora, fauna and cultural heritage assessments are underway. You'll continue to see our crews working around the rail line as we further define the scope.

Development work is expected to be complete in mid-2027.

Electrification will allow more trains to run along the Melton Line, servicing the booming communities in Melbourne’s west.

Making Melton greener

Community feedback helped shape planting and landscaping in the Melton Station precinct and broader project area.

Landscaping will be complete in early 2027 as we increase Melton's tree canopy by more than 20 per cent by planting:

  • more than 600 native trees
  • more than 120,000 native plants, shrubs and grasses.

At Ferris Road, we're also planting more than 200 native trees and over 45,000 native plants and shrubs which will gradually mature over time.

Community celebration at Ferris Road

The community came out in force to celebrate the new Ferris Road bridge, which opened in July, boosting safety and easing congestion.

More than 500 locals gathered for the celebration event on Sunday 30 August, enjoying family-friendly activities including face painting, Lego building and mini electric car rides with local traders catering the event.

The community will soon enjoy a First Nations Resting Space located next to the new Ferris Road bridge, which has been created with Elders from the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
