Works continue on the Brunt Road bridge
Brunt Road bridge to open in late April
The dangerous and congested level crossing at Brunt Road, Beaconsfield will be gone for good in mid 2024, one year ahead of schedule.
When traffic flows over the new road bridge, the Pakenham Line will be one step closer to being level crossing free by 2025. Removing this level crossing will improve journeys for the 8400 drivers passing through each day and allowing for more trains, to run more often.
Crews are working 24/7 until late April to finish the new road bridge, that will separate cars and trains for good.
To allow the works to be carried out safely, Brunt Road is closed between Edinburgh Drive and Rix Road from 8pm, Tuesday 9 April to late April, with detours in place for all road users.
Works include building a new footpath and shared use path across the new road bridge, providing a direct link to local schools, shops and services on either side of the rail line.
Project benefits
- New walking and cycling paths along the road bridge.
- Planting approximately 100 trees and 50,000 plants, shrubs and grasses.
- Reducing congestion for the 8400 vehicles that pass through the level crossing each day.
- Contributing to a level crossing free Pakenham Line by 2025.
Major works continue in Beaconsfield
Commuters in Beaconsfield will soon benefit from safer, less congested journeys with the Brunt Road and Station Street level crossings to be removed.
There's plenty of work happening in Beaconsfield with major works ongoing at Brunt Road and Station Street to remove the level crossings and make the Pakenham Line boom gate free by 2025.
24/7 works in April will see the new Brunt Road bridge open to vehicles and pedestrians, with new walking and cyclist paths over the rail line for locals to enjoy.
Once works are complete, we'll start works to close the level crossing at Station Street, Officer.
Works at Station Street, Beaconsfield are continuing, with construction north and south of the rail line to build the new foundations of the new road bridge taking place.
The boom gates at Station Street, Beaconsfield will be gone for good and the new road bridge open in 2025.
The Brunt work
We’ve been busy installing 160 individual panels that make up the retaining wall of the new road bridge.
The panels range from 1m to 9.5m in height and will be painted in earthy brick tones to match the area’s heritage.
We’ve also lifted the final 10 bridge beams into place, using 250 to 400 tonne cranes, with each bridge beam weighing up to 30 tonnes.
The shared use path approaches its final stages

Kids fun day at Beaconsfield
The Brunt Road and Station Street, Beaconsfield Level Crossing Removal Project team hosted a kid's activity day for locals in early April.
Beaconsfield's enthusiastic kids had fun building their own road bridge using large sized building blocks, getting involved in interactive activities and dressing up in their own hi-vis and hart hats.
Adults also had the opportunity to chat to the project team about upcoming works and changes to the way you'll travel once the new road bridge opens in late April.
The kids enjoyed interactive stations that highlighted the moving parts of a real-life construction project
