The 2 architect-designed underpasses will be located at Anderson Street and near Murray/ Goulburn streets, providing 2 crossing points over the rail line and more options for locals to move around the area.

The east side of Anderson Street will be transformed into a pedestrian- friendly community space, enhancing the vibrant village atmosphere and creating more open space.

Anderson Street is a key focal point for pedestrian movements, with more than 6,000 people crossing the rail line daily to access the village and Yarraville Station.

The new pedestrianised Anderson Street will make it safer, easier and quicker for locals to access the station and their local favourite traders on either side of the train tracks.

Anderson Street will be closed to vehicles in 2028 and the new underpasses will be open in 2029.

There will be more opportunities to have your say next year including new open space, car parking and public artwork.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • Boom gates are down for up to 56 minutes of the morning peak.
  • Up to 50 trains during the morning peak.
  • One fatality and 4 serious injuries since 2006 and 26 near misses involving trains, pedestrians and vehicles since 2016.
  • More trains, more often on the Werribee Line thanks to the Metro Tunnel, meaning more boom gate down time.

Shaping Yarraville

We’ve undertaken 3 rounds of community consultation comprising four community workshops and 4 information sessions with residents and traders plus 1200 surveys completed. In September we hosted community webinars and 'Meet the Project Team’ information sessions.

What we heard

How this will shape the Project

More parking and easier access to Yarraville village

You told us parking is important for accessing the village and supporting local businesses.

We’ll increase car parking in the Woods Street car park to improve access to the busy Yarraville village precinct.

Vibrant community spaces

You said Yarraville is unique and the new infrastructure should reflect that.

We’ll establish an Open Space Advisory Panel in early 2027 to help shape the Anderson Street community space and future use of the Woods Street Reserve, additional car parking and community space opportunities.

We’ll also work with local artists and schools on opportunities for community art that reflects Yarraville’s local character.

Supporting local traders

You told us maintaining convenient customer access, deliveries and servicing is important for local businesses.

We’ll work directly with traders as the design progresses on how they can benefit from the space and what elements are important to consider as part of final designs, including access and servicing needs, such as customer access, deliveries, waste collection, food delivery services, short- term parking and pick-up/drop-off areas.

Supporting a vibrant local economy

We heard that supporting Yarraville’s local businesses and village economy is important.

We'll work with Maribyrnong City Council to implement measures proposed by its economic assessment to help boost trader sales by up to 12 per cent.

Protecting trees and green space

You told us protecting established trees and vegetation is important to Yarraville’s character.

We'll minimise impacts to vegetation wherever possible. The elm grove will be retained, with the exception of 2 elm trees near the existing level crossing.

Improving access to Yarraville village

You told us traffic connections around Yarraville are important, particularly maintaining easy access to and from the village.

We’ll work with the Department of Transport and Planning and Maribyrnong City Council to investigate potential traffic improvements.

Safe, open and welcoming spaces

We heard that new connections across the rail line need to feel safe, open and easy to navigate.

The underpasses have been designed with safety in mind, with maximum visibility, plenty of light and clear sightlines. The design follows Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, and lifts will be monitored 24/7 by Metro Trains Melbourne’s control centre.

Accessible for everyone

You told us connections across the rail line must be easy for people of all abilities to access both sides of the village.

The project is designed in accordance with Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Department of Transport and Planning and Metro Trains Melbourne requirements.

Four lifts, stairs and ramps will provide different options for pedestrians and cyclists, including step-free access across the rail line.

Next steps for Yarraville

Thank you for getting involved with our community consultation activities in 2025 and 2026.

There will be more opportunities for consultation in 2027 on elements of the project including:

  • The new community space on Anderson Street
  • Woods Street Reserve reinstatement and car parking opportunities
  • Public artwork in the Yarraville precinct

We will engage with local community arts organisations to work with local school students to deliver artwork reflecting the unique people and character of the Yarraville community.

We will also be calling for expressions of interest (EOI) to join our Open Space Advisory Panel to help shape these important urban design elements.

The EOI process will launch in early 2027.
