Why are we building Bulleen Park & Ride?

Bulleen Park & Ride will be a premium station for Victoria's first dedicated busway along the Eastern Freeway – making it easier for people to use faster, more frequent and more reliable public transport to get to and from the city.

The new Bulleen Park & Ride will double the number of car parking spaces for rapid bus services along the freeway and provide secure parking for bicycles, links to Koonung Creek Trail, Myki services and toilets.

Where are we building Bulleen Park & Ride?

We’re building Bulleen Park & Ride on the east side of Thompsons Road to make it easier for people to access.

Building Bulleen Park & Ride here will also get it open four years earlier than planned so it is ready for people to use before Doncaster Park & Ride is closed for upgrades.

We will no longer need to build a temporary park and ride at Doncaster, reducing disruptions for passengers and creating opportunities to keep more open space during construction.

What’s new about the design?

As part of the project’s planning and approvals, an Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) for Bulleen Park & Ride showing the proposed design was exhibited for public comment in late 2020.

The UDLP included site layout plans, architectural drawings, landscape plans and a report outlining how the design meets strict requirements set for the North East Link Project through the Environment Effects Statement (EES) process, and the planning approvals that followed.

As a result of submissions, some changes were made to the project design and UDLP including:

• improvements to the green roof for the community and commuters by adding a bicycle repair station and extra bench seating
• better privacy and screening for residents along Kampman Street by including a solid section along the length of the noise wall
• more trees and shrubs along Kampman Street at the southern end with a deeper earth mound and garden bed.

What will happen at the Boroondara Tennis Centre site?

Now that we don’t need to use the land for a park and ride, it gives us more opportunities to look at how this space can be used once North East Link is built.

The builders developing detailed designs for the North East Link Project are working on this now, and there will be opportunities for the community to comment once detailed designs for the project are released starting from next year.

Work has also started to plan a new $21 million home for the Boroondara Tennis Centre in Glen Waverley. The 18-court tennis centre will be delivered by Monash City Council and include a new multi-sport pavilion, practice facilities and upgrades to the car park and pedestrian paths as well as community meeting and function facilities.

The new tennis centre is expected to be open in early 2024.

How many car parking spaces will be available?

Bulleen Park & Ride will have up to 370 car parking spaces, including 11 accessible car parks. Another 10 spaces for motorcycles and 5 ‘kiss-and-ride’ spaces for drivers who are dropping people off will also be available.

Building a new park and ride at Bulleen, and upgrading the park and ride at Doncaster will create 800 car spaces for people to use the new busway and rapid bus services along the Eastern Freeway.

What is a ‘green roof’ park?

A Victorian-first for a park and ride, the new Bulleen Park & Ride will feature a ‘green roof’ park – a reinforced roof covered in soil with landscaping.

The green roof park will have up to 5000 square metres of space for locals to use and will include small trees, shrubs and grasses, as well as seating and walking and cycling paths that connect the new park and ride with Koonung Creek Trail and Thompsons Road.

When will construction start?

Work to start preparing the site for construction is expected in late April/early May 2021. This will include building a temporary noise wall along Kampman Street.

Major works are expected to start in late June/early July 2021. Bulleen Park & Ride is expected to be open by late 2022.
