27 May 2025

We’re completing the M80 Ring Road, delivering new lanes through to Plenty Road and a seamless connection to the North East Link tunnels – taking 19,000 cars and trucks a day off Greensborough Road and giving local roads back to local people.

What you need to know

M80 Ring Road and interchange precinct

In June, we’ll continue working on the M80 Ring Road entry and exit ramps at Plenty Road as we prepare to build new lanes. This work will require nightly traffic changes and two weekend closures of the M80 Ring Road entry ramp from Plenty Road, between Friday 30 May and Monday 2 June and Friday 13 June and Monday 16 June.

Traffic management and signage will be in place to safely guide road users through the area.

When complete, the Greensborough-bound entry ramp from Plenty Road will have three lanes, improving traffic flow.

During this period, we’ll continue installing new permanent noise walls on the M80 Ring Road and along Greensborough Bypass, near Sellars Street. These noise walls will help reduce road and construction noise for nearby residents.

Construction of the M80 Ring Road Altona-bound and Diamond Creek Road bridges across the Yando Street underpass are progressing well on the Greensborough Bypass and will be completed later this year.

Greensborough Highway and Hurstbridge Line

We’re continuing to extend the rail tunnel under Greensborough Highway and build the new Grimshaw Street rail bridge. From 1 July to 25 July, buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge Line while we work 24 hours a day in the rail corridor.

Construction of the new Nell Street walking and cycling bridge is on track and scheduled to open in late 2025.

Watsonia Precinct

In late July, we’ll start building the foundations for the Elder Street landscaped bridge. We’ll continue to build permanent noise walls and the retaining wall along Greensborough Highway between Nell Street and Watsonia Road, and undertake utilities works on the Watsonia Road landscaped bridge.

Later in 2025, we’ll move Rosanna-bound traffic onto new lanes so we can start making space for the construction of new express lanes to the North East Link tunnels.

Grimshaw Street Interchange

We’re getting Grimshaw Street ready for major construction of the new interchange later in the year, including building retaining walls, relocating
utility services and preparing ramps.

From July, works will increase on Grimshaw Street, requiring daytime, overnight and weekend road closures at the intersection.

Later this year, works will ramp up with 24-hour activity, detours and lane closures in place at times.

During construction, we’ll be widening the Grimshaw Street bridge and building new ramps connecting to the North East Link tunnels and M80 Ring Road.

This new interchange will cut congestion and reduce travel times, with express lanes to the North East Link tunnels and dedicated lanes for local trips.
