Day and Night works in Watsonia, Macleod and Yallambie

With both Tunnel Boring Machines relaunched towards Bulleen, we're continuing works on Lower Plenty Road upgrading the Silk Street pedestrian bridge.

What we'll be doing

As the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) progress, we’ll construct cross passages between the 2 tunnels.

We’ll perform excavation and break through existing concrete walls underground to build multiple cross passages along the tunnel route. These passages will provide access between tunnel in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Activities to support tunnelling works will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may notice some noise and vibration at times during the day or night while works are completed near you.

We’ll aim to minimise noise and light impacts away from your property as much as possible

Increased truck movements entering and exiting the acoustic shed
Greensborough Road reduced to one lane in each direction at night at times
No U-turn on Greensborough Road between Somers Avenue and Torbay Street
Noise at night from construction activities, with continuous mitigations in place.

Construction of smoke duct shafts and cross passage tunnels including the excavation and breakthrough of existing concrete walls underground
Building the ventilation tunnel and northern ventilation structure including the operation of cranes
Steel fixing, concreting and formwork
Moving traffic barriers along Greensborough Road.

What to expect

Continuous works to build the ventilation tunnel including excavation to connect the ventilation tunnel to the main tunnel
Increased truck movements entering and exiting the northern ventilation structure site
Night works on site and on Greensborough Road
Greensborough Road reduced to one lane in each direction at night at times
Walking and cycling path closed from Yallambie to Blamey roads on the east side of Greensborough Road
The southbound Yallambie Road/Greensborough Hwy bus stop 10961 remains open
Noise and vibration at night, and dust from construction activities, with continuous mitigations in place.

Relocating drainage and installing gantry foundations for road signage on Lower Plenty Road
Piling and concrete works to build the foundation of the new Eel Bridge
Moving concrete barriers along Lower Plenty Road
Operating cranes to support continuous excavation works.

What to expect

Left lane closed on Lower Plenty Road between Kambea Crescent and Greensborough Road
Lower Plenty Road reduced to 1 lane in each direction between Greensborough Road and Crew Street
On-street parking unavailable on Lower Plenty Road between Greensborough Road and Crew Street
Access to and from Graham Road left-in, left-out only
Route 513 bus stops on Lower Plenty Road at Borlase Street and Kambea Crescent closed. Alternative bus stops available at Drysdale Street and Graham Road (approximately 200 metres away)
Noise at night and dust from construction activities, with continuous mitigations in place.

Upgrade works on the Silk Street pedestrian bridge, including constructing new concrete pier barrier.

What to expect

Left lane closed on Lower Plenty Road between Greensborough Road and Cantala Avenue
Cantala Avenue closed at Lower Plenty Road. Local access maintained with detours in place
Silk Street pedestrian bridge closed at times with detours in place
Some residential driveway access will be impacted. Impacted residents will be contacted directly
Route 513 bus stop on Lower Plenty Road at Cantala Avenue will be relocated (approximately 75 metres away)
Lower Plenty Road reduced to 1 lane in each direction at night at times.

Managing construction impacts

Throughout our works, you may experience noise, light, dust, and vibration. We manage these impacts through real time monitoring, water carts and street sweepers, targeted lighting, and reducing noise and vibration within the construction zone. You may also see workers and machinery, in and around construction areas, and an increase of trucks removing dirt from our worksites.

To stay safe, please follow all instructions from signage and traffic controllers. We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout these works.

Our TBMs are powering ahead, excavating the North East Link Tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen. Both TBMs will take planned breaks throughout their journey from Watsonia to Bulleen to undertake regular maintenance. You can track their progress at Tunnel boring machines tracker.

M80 Ring Road Completion upcoming disruptions

There'll be intermittent lane closures and speed reductions in place along Greensborough Highway, Greensborough Bypass, M80 Ring Road, Grimshaw Street and Plenty Road until late 2025.

At Grimshaw Street, crews will work at times during the day and night, with road closures and detours in place in July and August while we relocate underground utility services.

On Watsonia Road, intermittent lane and road closures will be required at times and on local roads, such as Service Road and Dennett Street in Watsonia. Sections of the M80 Ring Road Trail and Greensborough Bypass Path are closed with temporary long term detours in place.
