The Shepparton Line Upgrade has delivered more reliable journeys on modern VLocity trains, and work is continuing to enable more services on the line when the project is complete.

Benefits for passengers

The Victorian Government invested $356 million in the first two stages of the Shepparton Line Upgrade, delivering significant benefits
for passengers.

Stage 1 enabled 10 extra weekly services on the Shepparton Line and 29 additional coach services per week between Seymour and Shepparton.

Stage 2 has given passengers more reliable services, as well as modern trains, by allowing VLocity trains to run to and from Shepparton for the first time since October 2022.

The Victorian and Australian governments have invested $400 million in Stage 3 of the project, with work continuing to deliver signalling upgrades to enable nine return services on weekdays for Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison East
and Nagambie.

The Shepparton Line Upgrade is creating more than 600 jobs.

The Victorian and Australian governments have invested more than $4 billion in Regional Rail Revival, which is upgrading every regional passenger line in Victoria and creating 3,000 jobs.

Progress and delivery

The Shepparton Line Upgrade has already upgraded stations, delivered extra services and enabled modern VLocity trains to operate on
the line.

Work on Stage 3 of the project is well progressed. Stage 3 works already completed include the extension of the Murchison East passing loop, the Shepparton stabling expansion to accommodate extra trains and major upgrades to a 26-kilometre section of track.

Coaches replaced trains in March and April 2024 to enable track upgrades to take place and signalling infrastructure to be installed.

The work included the rebuilding of track through level crossings, as well as bridge improvements and sleeper, ballast and culvert replacement along 13 kilometres of track between Coes Road, Nagambie and Charles Cochran Lane, Wahring.

Signalling construction works also took place, including underground boring, trenching and pipe installation along sections of track between Seymour and Nagambie, and between Murchison East and Toolamba.

Next steps

The Regional Rail Revival team, V/Line and its contractors, Acciona Rail and KBR are working hard to complete the works required to enable the delivery of nine weekday return services, giving local communities more choices on when to travel and better access to work, health and education opportunities.
