We're building a brand new underground station at Monash

The new Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) station in Monash will provide students, workers and visitors with a direct train connection for the first time to Monash University and Melbourne’s largest employment and innovation hub outside of the CBD.

The new station will be located north of Monash University’s Clayton Campus, at the corner of Normanby and Howleys roads, Notting Hill. It will cut congestion and slash travel times by creating new connections to nearby education and healthcare.

2026- a huge year for SRL

Major construction is now well underway with tunnel boring machines onsite and tunnelling to begin this year.

Significant work has already been completed in Monash. We've moved underground services, upgraded traffic intersections for improved truck access, and installed fences and gates to keep workers and the community safe.

We’ve established our worksite, with site offices, worker facilities and on-site parking to keep local streets free of construction cars. We’re continuing earthworks to create strong ground conditions required to excavate the new underground station and support heavy construction machinery.

  • Guide walls will be installed to ensure the diaphragm walls are dug at the correct angle
  • These works will invovle noise, dust and vibration and large equipment operating on site.

Showcasing the future

A temporary fence is put up around the construction site for safety, and to help reduce noise, dust and light from construction works.

At the SRL East site in Monash, the fencing has been designed to show the vibrant, connected and innovative future of the area around the new station. The creative designs along Howleys and Normanby roads highlight the future station and city centre, Monash University, sports, local businesses, and the surrounding neighbourhood.

The new SRL station will be within walking distance to Monash University, housing, local businesses, healthcare and quality open spaces.

This design for the future is built on years of conversations we've been having with the community about their local area.

Monash progress update

Diaphragm walls explained

Concrete diaphragm walls are built deep into the ground to form a reinforced structure.

This technique is being used to build the walls of the future Monash station.

Diaphragm walls are built by excavating deep into the ground, installing steel cages and pouring concrete to create a solid underground wall. The walls are excavated using machines called clamshell grabs or hydromill cutters and are built as individual panels that will interconnect to form the perimeter of the station box.

Once the concrete diaphragm walls have cured, crews will excavate soil from between the walls in stages to create the site of the new underground SRL East station at Monash.
