Massive beams have lit up the night sky in Melbourne’s north west, as crews worked throughout the evening to complete the second stage of the beam lift for the new Calder Park Drive road bridge.
Over 2 nights, crews transported and craned 9 concrete beams into place on the south side of the rail line.
The giant beams were made locally in Melton, measuring 40m long and 2m high, and weighing about 90 tonnes each.
The beams connect the southern end of the new road bridge, and follow last November’s beam lift to connect the northern section of the bridge. The final beam lift to join both sides of the road bridge will take place later this year.
Crews are continuing to construct the bridge’s shared use path and will also finish landscaping works, planting more than 100,000 mostly native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses at Calder Park Drive and nearby Holden Road, which will close permanently at the level crossing.
The Calder Park Drive and Holden Road boom gates will be gone for good this year, bringing the Sunbury Line one step closer to being level crossing free in 2025.
The opening of the Metro Tunnel this year will also give commuters on the Sunbury Line access to 5 new underground stations in Melbourne.
