The Calder Park Drive project team has marked another major milestone, lifting in the final beams for the new road bridge being built over the rail line.
A 750-tonne crane positioned the final 9 concrete beams into place last week to complete the central span of the new Calder Park Drive bridge, set to open to traffic later this month.
The beams, each weighing 90 tonnes, were lifted into place during a week-long construction blitz, timed to coincide with buses replacing trains on the Sunbury Line.
As part of the 24/7 works, crews also poured the concrete to complete the centre of the 106m long bridge. Crews are also working around the clock to complete asphalting, line marking and tying in the road bridge with Calder Park Drive.
Other works in preparation for the level crossing removal include completing 900m of overhead wiring, finalising the new shared use path and drainage works at nearby Taylor’s Creek.
The Calder Park Drive level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge will open to traffic on Wednesday 23 July, boosting safety and easing congestion in the area.
The nearby Holden Road level crossing will close following the opening of the road bridge, making Calder Park boom gate free, and the Sunbury Line one step closer to being level crossing free in 2025.
The opening of the Metro Tunnel this year will also give passengers on the Sunbury Line access to 5 new underground stations in Melbourne.
