The new Calder Park Drive shared use path is nearing completion, with the eye-catching elevated structure in its final stages of construction.
Known as a switchback, the path’s looping design connects to the new Calder Park Drive road bridge at a more gentle gradient, improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
The road bridge being built over the rail line will feature a separated shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists on the eastern side of the bridge.
The switchback design’s striking colour scheme is inspired by the surrounding grasslands, and its complex construction uses a series of “falsework” or temporary scaffolding systems to support the suspended planks and platforms.
The structure’s eight concrete planks were lifted into place using a 400-tonne crane.
The new road bridge will open later this year and the dangerous and congested level crossing will be gone for good, boosting safety and easing congestion, and bringing the Sunbury Line one step closer to being boom gate free in 2025.
The opening of the Metro Tunnel this year will also give passengers on the Sunbury Line access to 5 new underground stations in Melbourne.
