Collecting seeds in Ringwood East

Back to Newsfeed

Equipped with secateurs, bags, buckets, labelling pens and more, we went behind the scenes on the Ringwood Level Crossing Removal Project with an ecologist to learn more about seed collecting within our project area.

On location at Dublin Road, Ringwood East, seed collection involves an ecologist identifying trees and assessing if there are seeds ripe and ready to collect.

With permits in place to ensure flora and fauna are not impacted, seed collection plays an important role in the local environment. It can help increase biodiversity in the local area, as well as supporting local fauna with a food source, habitat and shelter.

Most seeds collected are indigenous in origin, with seeds collected in the Ringwood project area identified as Eucalyptus species, Wallaby Grass and Acacias. Once seeds are collected, they go through a process to dry and are assessed to ensure insects are not present. The seeds we collect will head to local nurseries for propagation.
