Contract awarded for Parkdale level crossings

The Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale level crossings are closer to being gone for good, with a construction contract now signed for their removal.

The project is a major step towards making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029.

These 2 level crossings will be removed by elevating the rail line, unlocking about 2 MCGs of new open space for more trees, greenery and landscaping, gathering places for the community, walking and cycling paths, and sporting and recreational facilities.

A new Parkdale Station will also be built as part of the project, delivering modern and accessible facilities for passengers.

An alliance comprising Acciona, Coleman Rail, WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project will deliver the $450 million contract to build the elevated rail bridge and new station.

This alliance has already removed 12 level crossings and built 6 new stations on the Frankston Line and is now working to get rid of the Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road level crossings in Glen Huntly.

Each day 20,000 drivers pass through the Parkdale and Mentone crossings and the boom gates are down for more than a third of the morning peak. Getting rid of them is crucial to improving safety and easing congestion.

Major construction will begin next year, and the level crossings will be gone for good in 2025.

Updated designs for the level crossing removal and new station have recently been released, and you can have your say on these until Sunday 30 October.
