Easing congestion, improving safety at Seaford

Site investigations are underway at Seaford as part of work to remove 2 dangerous and congested level crossings.

Level crossings at Armstrongs Road and Station Street are being removed by building rail bridges over the roads and a brand-new Seaford Station, which will open in 2029 when the level crossings are gone for good.

As part of site investigations crews have been checking ground conditions, locating underground services and inspecting rail equipment along the rail corridor.

To allow the work to continue safely, 33 car parks have been closed on the south-west corner of the station car park until mid December, with up to 16 additional car parks also temporarily closed each day to allow ground testing.

Removing these crossings, which saw 7 near misses since 2016, will boost safety and ease congestion for the thousands of drivers who use the crossings every day, with the boom gates down for more than 30 minutes in the morning peak when up to 40 trains pass through.

It will also create more opportunity for new community spaces, improve walking and cycling connections, and create more space for car parking. Meanwhile, the new station will have modern, accessible facilities for passengers.

Frankston Line services will return to the City Loop in February next year when the Metro Tunnel is fully integrated into the wider network, adding an extra 1000 weekly services across Melbourne.

It will be followed by a level crossing free Frankston Line by 2029, when every set of boom gates will be gone from the line, making road and rail journeys safer and more reliable.

In total, 110 level crossings are being removed, with 87 already gone for good.
