The notorious Glen Huntly Road boom gates, which held up traffic for almost 60% of the morning peak, are gone for good as we ramp up works ahead of the ‘Big Dig’.
An all-woman crew removed the boom gates on a grey Glen Huntly morning, with works to decommission the overhead electricals of the dangerous tram square also taking place.
The final piles that will make up the walls of the 1.2km rail trench are being dug now.
With trains running express through Glen Huntly, you can catch a shuttle to take you to Caulfield or Ormond stations so you can catch the train.
Once the Big Dig starts on Friday 2 June, we’ll excavate around 65 Olympic swimming pools of soil, lay new tracks, and build a new modern station. Buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line until early August.
Glen Huntly Road will reopen, boom gate and tram square free in mid July. Until this time buses replace Route 67 trams between Glen Huntly Tram Depot and the Carnegie terminus.
Neerim Road will close on Monday 29 May with the boom gates removed shortly after. The road will reopen in late June.
You’ll still be able to get to the shops on Glen Huntly Road with pedestrian access always maintained, so head down and support your local traders. Travellers Aid buggy is running between 8am to 5pm, 7 days a week to make getting to the shops easier.
There will be other road closures during this time, so head over to the disruptions map for the latest information.
