Getting ready for the new road bridge in Altona

Crews are on the ground in Altona as part of early works to remove the dangerous and congested Maidstone Street level crossing by building a new road bridge over the rail line.

Ahead of major works kicking off next month, crews have been working with utility providers to relocate underground power, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.

As part of these works, 560m of power cables, 670m of telecommunications cables, 214m of gas lines and 215m of water pipes are being relocated.

Other works currently underway include building a new temporary detour route between Slough Road and Ajax Road ahead of Ajax Road closing at the Maidstone Street intersection.

Crews will also begin clearing and compacting the ground near the project site office on Maidstone Street in preparation for bridge foundation works, creating a level surface to allow heavy equipment to operate safely when major works begin.

The final designs for the new road bridge were released in June, with community feedback helping to shape the design, which avoids impacts to important utilities and protected grasslands.

The Maidstone Street road bridge will open to traffic in 2027, boosting safety and easing congestion in the area by permanently separating trains and vehicles, and providing a better connection to the new West Gate Tunnel.
