
Glen Huntly Road has reopened, boom gate free with cars, trams, and cyclists able to cross the rail line for the first time in 10 weeks.
With 2 sets of boom gates gone for good, works continue on the new Glen Huntly Station and getting the Frankston Line ready for trains by early August.
The Glen Huntly level crossings were some of the most dangerous and congested in Melbourne where boom gates were down for almost 60% of the morning peak as up to 40 trains ran through the crossings
Since 2016, there were 12 near-misses at the Glen Huntly Road level crossing 10 of those involved pedestrians.
As well as the level crossing, the tram square at Glen Huntly Road has also been removed, ensuring more reliable journeys for Route 67 trams and drivers.
More than 64 Olympic swimming pools worth of soil was removed during Glen Huntly’s ‘big dig’. Crews worked 24/7 to excavate the 1.2km trench and works continue on laying ballast, tracks and building other rail infrastructure.
The new modern station precinct will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, tram passengers and drivers as well as create a better connection between the station, shops, homes and amenities.
