Carrum is set to farewell 3 dangerous and congested level crossings with major works starting in the beachside suburb soon. We’re working to transform Carrum by building a new station, creating new vibrant open community spaces, and improving connections to the beach.
We will be building a 900m long rail bridge which will have trains running on it by early 2020, and revitalising the area with a $50 million package, this includes planting more than 80,000 plants and shrubs across four new community spaces.
Early works started in Carrum mid last year to prepare the area for major construction. Crews are now relocating underground services such as gas, water and power as well as upgrading signalling along the Frankston Line to improve the reliability of services for commuters.
During February there will be partial closures of the Carrum Station car park. From Saturday 9 March the car park will be closed until construction finishes.
A temporary rail track will soon be built from Karrum Karrum Bridge to Eel Race Road to keep trains running during construction and minimise disruptions to commuters.
When the temporary track is ready Carrum Station will be closed and the existing rail line will be removed. Piling work will allow for the installation of piers to support the rail bridge.
During the station closure, trains will run express through Carrum and shuttle buses will transport passengers from Carrum Station to Seaford and Bonbeach stations.
The rail bridge and new station will be open in early 2020 with work continuing on the Carrum revitalisation. This work will see more than 1.2 hectares – equivalent to the size of 2 soccer fields – of new community space created, transforming the area.
The new spaces include a major new foreshore park, a village green at the Carrum shops, a town square next to the new station, and station garden at the second entrance to the station near Walkers Road.
We will be hosting an exhibition at the Carrum Info Hub in late February as well as offering walking tours of the area to point out where our works will happen.
Access to local shops will be maintained throughout construction, and the project is encouraging the Carrum community to continue to support local businesses by shopping locally.
All works to complete the pedestrian and bike ramps on the Karrum Karrum Bridge and paths along the river will be done by April. The ramp on the Bonbeach side of the river will be open by late February with the ramp on the Carrum side open in April. The bridge was opened months ahead of schedule in September last year.
