Major construction underway at Webster Street

Major construction is underway to remove the level crossing at Webster Street and build a new road underpass that will transform how people move through Dandenong.

The new underpass will stretch approximately 450m, connecting Cheltenham and Hammond roads with Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street. This link will move traffic away from Dandenong’s CBD and keep heavy vehicles off Webster Street, making the area quieter and safer for locals.

In the coming weeks, crews will complete piling works for the new rail bridge and road underpass as well as relocating underground utilities east of the rail line. Excavation works west of the rail line will also start to build the underpass.

During the works, more than 33,000 cubic metres of soil will be removed and 13,600 cubic metres of concrete will be poured for the underpass.

Construction is also underway on the new walking and cycling path along Webster Street in Woodcock Reserve. The new path will run along the south side of Dandenong Creek and under the rail line, linking with the Dandenong Creek Trail and connecting residents to local shops and services in Dandenong’s CBD.

Crews have been busy along the rail corridor since March completing the first piles on Thomas Street, setting up site offices, fencing, and storage areas for materials and equipment.

Buses will replace trains this weekend between Westall, Berwick and Cranbourne stations from 8.30pm, Friday 18 July to last service, Sunday 20 July.

The Webster Street level crossing will close later this year, and the new road underpass will open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.

The new underpass will reduce congestion, deliver a more reliable road network and prepare Dandenong for future development.

Removing the level crossing will eliminate more than 60 minutes of boom gate down time in the morning peak, saving travel time for up to 10,000 drivers each weekday.

Getting rid of the crossing will also make the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines boom gate free this year, with passengers able to access 5 state-of-the-art underground stations when the Metro Tunnel opens later this year.
