Making Macleod level crossing-free

Back to Newsfeed

We’re removing the Ruthven Street level crossing in Macleod, making the suburb boom-gate free by 2027.

Removing the Ruthven Street level crossing will ease congestion on local roads, free up space for the community to enjoy and create more room for pedestrian and cycling connections.

Around 12,600 drivers travel through this crossing each day. Boom gates are down for up to 29 minutes of the morning peak, with up to 28 trains travelling through during this time.

Early engineering assessments suggest a new rail bridge will be built to remove the Ruthven Street level crossing, opening up space for the community and creating better cycling and walking connections.

The second stage of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication is currently underway, which will allow more train services to run, so removing this crossing now will prevent even more boom gate down time in the future.

Crews are working to duplicate track between Greensborough and Montmorency and between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen to allow more trains to run on the line and build new, modern stations at Greensborough and Montmorency.

We’ve already removed level crossings at Grange Road, Alphington and Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna creating more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians.

More detail, including on construction timelines and community consultation, will be provided in the coming months.
