Staying on track in Parkdale

Back to Newsfeed

Major works are progressing at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale.

Crews are currently building a 1.8km temporary track to keep the Frankston Line running while we remove the 2 dangerous and congested level crossings and build a new Parkdale Station.

Starting north of Warrigal Road and tying back into the main track south of Parkers Road, the temporary track will minimise disruption to the community during works and ensure trains continue to run.

Made up of 4800 sleepers, 12,000 tonnes of ballast and 6.5km of rail, trains will run on the temporary track from early November until mid 2024 while we get on with works.

Parkdale Station will close in late October until mid 2024 when we open the new station and trains start running on the new rail bridge.

During this time, a shuttle bus will operate between Mentone and Mordialloc stations to connect Parkdale Station passengers to Frankston Line trains. The shuttle bus will also provide access across the rail line for the community.

Once trains are running on the temporary track, we will

  • lay the foundations for the rail bridge by installing concrete columns in the ground, commonly known as piling
  • create large gravel paved areas, known as hard stands, to safely store the heavy machinery we will use to build the rail bridge
  • pour concrete to form the bridge piers, which are the concrete columns that will support the rail bridge across the roads and open space.
