Train storage to more than double at Kananook

Works to more than double the number of trains that can be stored at the Kananook Train Stabling Yard so more trains can run more often on the Frankston Line will kick off soon.

The project will increase the capacity of the yard from 8 to 21 trains, build maintenance and train wash facilities to allow more trains to be housed on the Frankston line.

The expanded facility will also include a train wash, a maintenance shed with space to work on two trains, extra facilities for workers, and an additional connection to the Frankston Line so trains can easily enter and exit the site.

The project was future-proofed, so these new works will have minimal impact to the community and traders in the area.

The project will create more than 100 jobs during construction and more than 100 jobs will be based at the facility, including more than 50 new jobs, once the expanded facilities open.

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) delivered the first stage of the Kananook Train Stabling Yard in May 2020 as part of the Carrum level crossing removal works. In 2022 a new high tech signal control centre and better driver facilities were added to the site, with 36 workers currently at the stabling yard.

A $271 million contract for the work has been awarded to the same alliance comprising Acciona Coleman Rail, WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne in partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Project. The alliance is currently working on the Glen Huntly and Parkdale level crossing removals and has removed 12 crossings so far on the Frankston Line.

The Frankston Line will be level crossing-free by 2029 with all 27 dangerous and congested crossings gone for good, and 17 new stations built, changing the way locals live, work and travel.

Frankston Line passengers will be able to change at Caulfield for Metro Tunnel services, giving them rail access for the first time to the Parkville health and education precinct via Parkville Station and the St Kilda Road employment precinct via Anzac Station.

Together with the Metro Tunnel, these projects will create room for 36,000 more passengers every week on the Frankston Line during peak periods.

Across Melbourne, 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 70 already gone for good, boosting safety and easing congestion.
