Crews have wrapped up a 14-day construction blitz as part of works to close the dangerous and congested Webster Street level crossing and build a new road under the rail line, connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
Earlier this month, crews worked around the clock while trains weren’t running on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, digging more than 50 piles to form the foundations for the new underpass and rail bridge, completing overhead wiring works and continuing construction of the new walking and cycling path.
The new path will run along the south side of Dandenong Creek under the rail line, linking with the Dandenong Creek Trail and connecting residents to local shops and services in the heart of Dandenong.
Crews also poured more than 900 cubic metres of concrete to create the foundations of the underpass – equivalent to the volume of 28 shipping containers.
During the works, hungry construction workers supported local traders such as Sahar Takeaway and Gold Pies Bakery, consuming more than 120 kebabs and 70 pies, while passengers on the replacement buses also enjoyed muffins and cookies from nearby Beletti Cafe and The Nong Café.
Thank you to everyone for your patience while crews worked to complete these major works.
The project team will hit the tracks again in spring for more around the clock works, when the Webster Street level crossing closes for good.
The new underpass will open in 2026, two years ahead of schedule, reducing congestion, delivering a more reliable road network and preparing Dandenong for future development.
Removing the level crossing will eliminate more than 60 minutes of boom gate down time in the morning peak, saving travel time for up to 10,000 drivers each weekday.
Getting rid of the crossing will make the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines boom gate free this year, with passengers able to access 5 state-of-the-art underground stations when the Metro Tunnel opens.
