Works ramping up at Webster Street, Dandenong

Back to Newsfeed

We’re gearing up to remove the level crossing at Webster Street and build a new road underpass that will transform how people move through Dandenong.

In recent weeks, crews have been busy along the rail corridor, setting up site offices, fencing, and storage areas for materials and equipment. Early piling works have already kicked off at Thomas Street, with full-scale construction set to begin in the coming weeks.

To prepare the site, teams are relocating utilities and using earthmovers and excavators to ready the ground for piling and excavation.

The new underpass will stretch approximately 450m, connecting Cheltenham and Hammond roads with Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street. This link will move traffic away from Dandenong’s CBD and keep heavy vehicles off Webster Street, making the area quieter and safer for locals.

The level crossing will close later this year to prepare for more trains, more often once the Metro Tunnel opens later this year. The new road underpass will open in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.

With the removal of the Webster Street level crossing, Dandenong and the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will be boom gate free later this year.
